Mock Chow Mein Hot Dish,My kids grew up eating this and absolutely love it. They are now serving it to their own families. It’s one of my “comfort foods”.,I grew up with hot dish and couldn’t find the recipe. This is it! Have always loved it.,The recipe is fine but a bit incomplete. For the real Minnesota Lutheran deal you need to add a tad more soy sauce (‘bland’ is no insult in the midwest, but ‘too bland’ is), plus canned sliced water chestnuts. (I’ve also seen it done with some canned bean sprouts tossed in.) This hot dish was ubiquitous at every church ‘potluck’ dinner I attended as a kid. My mom always brought tomato sauced casseroles, but 2 or 3 ladies could always be relied upon to bring a ‘chow mein hot dish’ like the one featured here.
